Questions before you sit down

Do two people on one keyboard jam each other?
Sometimes, which is why games here split the keys into halves. A cheap membrane keyboard often refuses three keys at once when they sit on the same row, so pick pairs from different rows. If it still jams, plug in a second USB keyboard; the computer reads both at the same time.
Do we need a controller?
Not required. Most games here play on the keyboard, and a few also accept a controller if you happen to own one. If you have exactly one, give it to the person on the right and let the left player keep the keys, as long as that game allows mixing the two.
The second player presses and nothing moves. What now?
Click once in the middle of the game frame first, because the keyboard only counts while that window has focus. If that does not fix it, check whether the game uses the arrow keys at all, and turn off Sticky Keys in the Windows accessibility settings. Those two steps cover most cases.
How long is one round?
Three to eight minutes, depending on the game and on how many rounds the two of you agreed to beforehand. Fighting games tend to be shorter, defence and racing games longer. If a round passes ten minutes, you are probably in the wrong mode rather than in a long game.
What gets saved afterwards, and who keeps score?
Nothing needs saving on the machine. The score for an evening belongs on paper, kept beside the keyboard, because paper is visible to both people and nobody can edit it behind the other's back. Tomorrow starts a new round, and that is also how an evening gets an ending.
