Loser Buys the Water
44 games · 1/2
This section is for rounds with a clean result, the kind where the loser has to stand up and fetch the water. A round lasts from twenty seconds to three minutes, exactly one person wins, and there is nowhere to hide a draw. We accept one-against-one fighting games, games scored by rounds, and games that put the winner's name on screen when it ends. We reject online multiplayer, games with character levels that have to be ground out, games that sell items for real money, and anything where a newcomer cannot beat someone who started three days ago. Keys follow the house rule: the left player keeps W A S D and Space, the right player keeps the four arrow keys and Enter. The R key is reserved for the person who just lost, because that is the person who needs the rematch immediately. Before the first round, agree on the length of the set: three rounds, five rounds, or first to two in a row. That agreement takes ten seconds and saves the whole evening.

Every title here is built for a phone screen. Pages open in a couple of seconds on a mid-range handset, and you can close the tab without losing anything.
Three ways to split a keyboard
Choose the split by game type, not by the preference of the faster player.
| Split | Keys | Fits |
|---|---|---|
| Down the middle | A S D W and arrows | Shooters, runners |
| By function | One moves, one acts | Fighting games with many buttons |
| By turn | Each holds half the time | Strategy and puzzle games |
In Loser Buys the Water, the wrong split is the most common reason a first round ends in irritation.
Questions players actually ask
Why do I lose every round to the same move?
Because you are reacting to it instead of anticipating it. A repeated move has a fixed wind-up, and the counter is a pre-emptive block rather than a faster attack. Watch the wind-up, not the hit.
Is it better to attack or to wait in a local fighter?
Wait. Local fighting games reward the uncommitted player, because a missed attack leaves a recovery window longer than the attack's own duration. Patience is the whole strategy, and it feels wrong for the first ten rounds.
Why does the same combo stop working halfway through a match?
Because hitstun decays with each hit in the string, and the decay is faster at low health. End strings with a knockdown rather than trying to extend them. The combo that worked at full health is not the combo that works at twenty percent.
How do I beat a player who only spams?
Block, then punish the recovery. Spamming works because it is fast and repetitive; it fails because it is predictable. One blocked string turns into one free punish, and two of those end the round.
Why do I get cornered every single round?
Because you are retreating when you are pressured, and retreating walks you into the wall. Roll or dash through the opponent instead. Passing through is the only move that changes which side of the screen you are on.
Should I use the heavy attack?
Only as a punish. Heavy attacks are slow enough to block on reaction and punishable if they miss, so their value is the damage after a blocked string rather than in neutral. Beginners use them as openers and lose for it.
Why is the second player's character stronger?
Because the roster is rarely perfectly balanced, and the second player usually picks second. That is the advantage, not the character. Alternate who picks first and the imbalance moves with the pick order.
How do we settle a match that keeps going to a tiebreaker?
Play a fixed number of rounds and accept the result. Endless tiebreakers reward endurance, and endurance is not the skill being tested. Three rounds, winner takes it, then swap characters.
Why does my character feel unresponsive at the start of a round?
Because the round-start animation is not cancellable and your first input is buffered during it. Press your opening move during the last frames of the animation rather than after it. That is a free half-second on every round.
What is the fastest way to improve at a local fighter?
Learn one punish and one anti-air. Two tools cover ninety percent of what a casual opponent does. Depth comes later; the first ten wins come from those two answers.
Player notes
I lost ten rounds to the same move before I realised I was reacting instead of predicting. Block first, punish after.
Player note, local fighting-game player
The heavy attack is a punish, not an opener. Every round I opened with it, I lost.
Player note, plays fighters with friends
Roll through, not back. Retreating is how you end up in the corner every round.
